JOHN GRUENWALD

John Gruenwald was born in Milwaukee, WI in 1951 and began drawing pictures when he was 4. When he was 6 his mother, running from her husband, took the 3 children to Arizona and later southern California, moving & changing jobs frequently to cover her trail. Back in Wisconsin for high school, his identity firm as an artist, a teacher introduced Gruenwald to etching and thus began his love of printmaking.

Majoring in printmaking at Layton School of Art & Design, upon graduation, Gruenwald opened a contact and publishing print shop with his instructor and embarked on a 25 year career as a printer for other artists. From Milwaukee he moved from Taos, New Mexico, and opened Windmill Press, a few years later he worked at Landfall Press in Chicago, and then back to Milwaukee as Cream City Graphics - publishing subscription portfolios of Wisconsin artists.

In 1994 Gruenwald moved to San Francisco and in his first week there met Austin Printmaker Terry Chastain. The two merged equipment and space and became Tinhorn Press, the name of the studio the two share to this day in addition to Tinhorn Press/Gallery across the street from the original press.

Gruenwald's work is represented by galleries in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and California and can be found in collections around the world.
